MMLF GET OUT THERE AND TRI – MISSION STATEMENT

Our society is facing an alarming incidence of childhood obesity. We hope to provide events that encourage all children including overweight and obese children to interact with their friends and engage in healthy activities with the support of their family. Such events keep children engaged in positive activities, develop strong peer groups, and improve focus and personal discipline, which translates directly into better performance in school. We want to encourage our children to get outside, move, and have fun!  We also want to set an example for our kids by engaging in these activities ourselves and showing them the pleasure and value associated with physical activity.

Therefore, on behalf of myself and John Curley, anchor of Evening Magazine, we are pleased to introduce the first annual “Get Out There and TRI Series.” On June 27th and September 19th, 2009, we will hold triathlons for adult and child competitors at Cottage Lake in Woodinville, Washington, and on August 23rd, we will hold a children’s race at Lake Sammamish, Washington.

Unlike other Northwest race series, our triathlon series stands out by targeting people of all sizes and athletic abilities. We are promoting health over competition, supporting both teamwork and individual performance, and equating success with fun. Specifically, our series offers three unique experiences:

¨       Motivating Everyone with Super Short Distances: These are “super sprint” triathlons, which are shorter than the commonly held “sprint” triathlon. The shorter distance encourages a wider variety of people to participate. Most people who never thought they could complete a triathlon can finish this event and gain a strong feeling of personal accomplishment.

¨       Redefining the “Elite” Category: Most triathlons have an “elite wave,” where the pros and other “super athletes” who’ve qualified for the time requirement compete. For most people, even the words “Elite Wave” are intimidating. In our triathlons, almost anyone who has participated in a triathlon before can join this elite category. Our “Elite Racers” will go through the super sprint distance twice, and have an experience not typically available to them by other events.

¨       Beating Your Time with a Race-Train-Race Format: We want to encourage a summer of training! Participants complete the first triathlon on June 27th and then continue to train all summer to beat their time in the second race on September 19th. This helps fulfill our mission to increase healthfulness among adults by encouraging training throughout the summer; and for families to spend time together while providing an environment for parents to be active role models to their children.

Our triathlon series is uniquely geared towards creating a positive, healthy environment for adults and families. We seek to foster regional events that encourage the everyday person, the overweight, and the armchair athlete to take pride in themselves and embrace a spirit of trying something new
